Sources make navigation simple

The WING is jam-packed with I/O — 374 inputs and outputs, to be exact. And if you include its internal signals, the WING includes 400 inputs and outputs.

Faced with this much I/O, Behringer’s engineering team re-imagined the flow of a traditional mixer, putting the emphasis on your source audio, using what Behringer calls — quite fittingly — Sources.

In the WING, inputs are much more than historical inputs, because they contain metadata on what the Source is — tags, input icon, input colour, gain, phantom power, and if the Source is mono, stereo, or mid-side. All of that information follows the Source to any channel.

With one simple button, that information can be copied to the channel, and the tags, icon, colour, and other metadata show up on the channel immediately.

If you move a Source to another channel, the information goes with it, no need for old fashioned copying and pasting.

The implementation is carefully thought out, as well.

Let’s face it, labelling and gain-staging 374 Sources can take some time. The workload can be easily split between two people as the WING is ready for dual operators.

One person can be in charge of labelling the channels, including name, icon, colour, tags, multiple mute groups, mono/stereo/mid-side configuration, and more.

Using the 4-channel area of the WING as a separate work area, a second person can be in charge of gain-staging and determining phantom power for each source. To make things easier still, this can also be done from the WING Co-Pilot tablet app to label or set any of the parameters while patching from the stage.

The beauty of this is whether you are looking at a channel, SD recorder, or any other output, you will always see and be able to refer to the Source.

Channels redefined

With so much focus on Sources, the WING has to go beyond the historical definition of what a channel is as well. With 374 Sources, a single 1-channel input seems a little underpowered.

That’s why the WING has redefined what a single channel can do.

Each of its 48 channels — 40 Inputs plus eight returns — can operate as mono, stereo, or mid-side. And when you assign a stereo Source to a channel, it automatically renders the channel in stereo.

On top of that, each channel features an alternate (ALT) input that can be stereo as well, which makes toggling between two Sources a breeze.

The WING’s ALT inputs are a life saver.

For example, say you have stereo tracks playing from a computer, but you also have a redundant hardware track player that’s synced to the computer. If the computer fails, the hardware tracks can take over with either a command or automatically.

On a traditional console, that would take four channels. On the WING, it’s just one. Simply route the computer’s stereo Source to a single channel, then specify the ALT input as the hardware player stereo signal.

Other applications could be a redundant vocal mic. If the battery in a wireless transmitter unexpectedly goes out, the vocalist grabs a backup a microphone, and the signal immediately switches to the second mic. Again, this uses just one channel.

Virtual sound checks have never been more straightforward. Just assign your 48 USB playback tracks or 64 XLive playback tracks to ALT inputs, hit play, and everything can automatically switch and be ready to go for your virtual soundcheck.

Mono or stereo? It’s all the same to the WING

All of the WING’s 48 input channels and 28 bus mixes can be used for mono, stereo, or mid-side sources — no channel linking required. And, as noted above, when you assign a stereo Source to a channel it automatically renders the channel in stereo.

Best of all, there’s no need to reboot the console when you apply a mode change. This means that you can make on-the-fly changes from mono to stereo and back again.

Innovative channel editing section for lightning-fast operation

Designed from the ground up for immediate channel status overview and flow of operation, the WING’s innovative channel editing section offers effortless operation.

It’s tailor-made for multitasking, enabling you to work on the selected channel’s processing, even while the main display is being used for something else entirely.

And the WING’s touch-sensitive rotary controls put the most relevant information right at your fingertips.

Benefit from first-class hands-on control

The Behringer WING supplies you with all the hands-on control you need.

It all starts with 24 motorised 100 mm faders.

These ultra-smooth faders make this digital console an absolute joy to mix on. It's central section includes a bevy of user-assignable controls, including four touch-sensitive rotary encoders and 20 buttons with two LCD screens.

Apply whatever functions you’d like to have within reach, and they’ll always be at your fingertips. Make fine adjustments of up to eight user parameters with the WING’s adjustable display wheel, or use it for DAW remote control via USB MIDI.

The WING’s configuration also includes pre-defined functionality for USB and SD card recorder transport, show control, and mute groups.

Loaded with top-shelf processing

Putting a pro-quality sheen on your mixes is easy with the Behringer WING.

A Standard FX rack with eight true-stereo processors supplies you with a useful array of modulation, EQ, and dynamics effects.

Beyond that, you also get a second Premium FX rack with eight true-stereo processors with sought-after algorithms from TC Electronic’s M3000 multi-effects processor, as well as world-class effects from Lexicon, Quantec, and EMT.

All 40 of the WING’s stereo input channels boast built-in EQ and dynamics, some of which are modelled after famous hardware from legendary manufacturers like Pultec, SSL, SPL, Neve, Focusrite, dbx, Universal Audio, Elysia, and Empirical Labs.

Finally, this digital mixer’s four main, eight matrix, and 16 stereo aux buses all feature dual inserts, 8-band parametric EQ's, a stereo imager, and full dynamics processing.

Packed with ample I/O and limitless expansion

The WING comes loaded with ample I/O and is highly expandable as well, granting you a tremendous level of flexibility.

It all starts with 40 stereo input processing channels, as well as eight stereo aux channels. Output processing channels include 16 stereo aux buses, eight stereo matrixes, and four stereo mains.

You’ll benefit from plug-and-play remote I/O connectivity for up to 144 input and output signals via three AES50 ports.

The WING boasts AES/EBU stereo digital I/O, two headphone connectors, MIDI I/O, and four GPIO ports. It includes a WING-LIVE card, enabling up to 64 channels of 32-bit/48kHz audio to be captured directly to a pair of SD or SDHC cards.

You can also install optional cards to attain Dante, SoundGrid, or MADI support. On top of that, the WING makes a great studio tool, thanks to its built-in 48-in/48-out USB audio interface, which includes DAW remote functionality that emulates HUI and Mackie Control.

Uncompromising design ensures top-shelf sound

When it comes to sound quality, the Behringer WING doesn’t compromise. 40-bit floating-point processing at 48 kHz or 44.1 kHz with 1 ms round-trip latency yield the top-shelf sound you demand.

Eight legendary MIDAS Pro mic preamps and eight MIDAS Pro XLR outputs ensure that you capture high-quality sound. Eight channels of line-level auxiliary I/O on balanced TRS connectors bring in signals from media players or computers with the utmost in fidelity.

Need more? A built-in StageCONNECT interface adds 32 channels of low-latency I/O over a single XLR microphone cable.

Using the WING’s three AES50 networks, you can connect to 144 Sources. What’s more, the AES50 networks are compatible with MIDAS M32 and Behringer X32 mixers - simply join your current M32/X32 network, and you’re good to go.

You can also add Dante or MADI for endless possibilities.

Fast, dependable automixing with Auto Pilot

When you need fast, dependable automixing, the WING’s Auto Pilot gives you exactly that, providing you with automixing with two groups of gain sharing on any 16 input channels.

And we do mean fast — it automatically tracks which microphone is receiving the highest levels and instantly increases its channel gain, all while reducing the sum of gain for all other channels in the same group.

And it sounds excellent — ambient noise remains low, while intelligibility and gain before feedback are increased.

Auto Pilot is perfect for corporate events, panel discussions, house of worship, and broadcast applications with multiple speakers.

From Behringer:

The Personal Mixing Console

The WING control surface utilises a large capacitive touchscreen interface with touch-sensitive rotary controls for a new ease of operation. Three separate fader sections and a Custom Controls section can be tailored easily and intuitively to meet your personal requirements.

No matter if you need a specific bus send fader next to the corresponding channel fader, or a dedicated “money” channel always at your fingertip, or even sharing the surface with two engineers - WING can be configured to elevate your production to a new level.

You can even replace and customise the massive wooden armrest with something funkier if you like.

Why Sources?

What is the purpose of mixing in the first place?

While considering the signal path of audio production for live or studio applications, we were stunned to find that much of the terminology is still driven by historical technical implementation, rather than its actual purpose.

Normally, consoles focus on input numbers assigned to channels and auxes. WING is offering a substantially different perspective by focusing on the Source as the reason for any mixing, say a bass drum signal or the lead vocal. Inputs are therefore given more properties than just a number.

Sources can be in mono, stereo or mid-side mode, own headamp parameters like gain and phantom power, with specific source mute and metering. They can also be given a colour, icon, name and several tags for grouping and filtering purposes.

All of this describes the actual Source first, before channels are used for processing or mixing.

The beauty of this is that you can label Sources using our WING Co-Pilot app while patching on stage and no matter if the signal is patched to a channel, to SD recording or to any other output, you will always see and refer to that Source.

Mono/Stereo

All 48 input channels and 28 bus mixes can be used for mono, stereo or mid-side sources.

Assigning a stereo source to any channel automatically renders the channel stereo, and its stereo imager stage provides control over width from 150% stereo down to mono. The console does not need a reboot to apply any mode changes. Their channel, bus and subgroup configuration can be changed any time on the fly.

See why it is a WING?

Legacy Built In Every Channel

Alternatively to the excellent WING EQs and dynamics, all channels and buses feature plug-ins for gates, compressors and equalisers, including high-end simulations modelled after the most famous hardware such as Pultec EQ, SSL Bus Compressor and Gate/Expander, SPL Transient Designer, Neve EQ, Compressor and Gate, Focusrite ISA and D3, DBX160, LA-2A, 1176, Elysia mPressor, and Empirical Labs Distressor.

Evident

WING's innovative channel editing section is designed from the ground-up for immediate channel status overview and flow of operation.

It allows working on the selected channel processing even when the main display is used for something completely unrelated. Touch-sensitive rotary controls allow the most relevant information to be displayed at your fingertips.

Even More Custom Controls

A central section offers user-assignable controls, i.e. 4 rotary encoders and 20 buttons with 2 LCDs. You decide whatever functions you'd like to have within your reach, always.

A big rotary wheel offers fine-adjustments of up to 8 user parameters or can be used for DAW remote control via USB MIDI.

The control configuration also includes pre-defined functionality for USB and SD card recorder transport, show control and mute groups.

Perfect Balance and Ultimate Tone Shaping

WING Input channels feature lo-cut and hi-cut filters, tilt-EQ, all-pass or Sound Maxer, in addition to the 6-band parametric EQ. All buses, matrices and mains even feature an 8-band parametric EQ.

Alternatively, WING offers 8 meticulous emulations of famous hardware equalisers for use in each and every channel, whenever you need that special vibe on your signals.

Premium Effects

The WING Premium FX rack boasts 8 true-stereo processors including spectacular emulations of some of the industry's most revered reverbs, original TC VSS3 algorithms, along with Lexicon, Quantec and EMT emulations. Fantastic delays, voice doubling, chromatic pitch correction, tape saturation and there is way more to it…

Effects Unleashed

Another set of 8 true-stereo processors provides a wide array of modulation, equalisation, dynamics and non-linear effects, and even four iconic guitar amplifiers with cabinet simulations.

If push comes to shove, a guitarist can just DI his guitar or pedals straight into the stage box, which is especially useful on quiet stages and house of worship applications.

Connected

With 374 inputs and 374 outputs, a lot of digital connectivity is required.

WING provides 3 AES50 SuperMAC audio networking ports for connecting digital stageboxes or sharing up to 144 input and 144 output streams with other mixing consoles.

There are 48 x 48 channels of USB audio and another 64 x 64 channels of Audio over IP (AoIP module optional), plus AES/EBU stereo I/O.

The WING expansion card slot, featuring the LIVE SD recording card or accommodating option cards for various standards, such as ADAT, MADI, DANTE, and WSG, offers another 64 x 64 channels of audio in/out.

The brand new Klark Teknik StageCONNECT interface allows transmission of 32 channels 24-bit audio with sub-millisecond latency, together with control data and 18 W of power over a single standard microphone cable. Given its flexibility and ease of use, this may well become the future of XLR.

We are considering opening our implementation to other developers, allowing them to create their own projects featuring StageCONNECT.

Pristine Springs

While we have limited the number of local analog I/O, we have not allowed for any compromise on their quality.

Behringer is proud to incorporate 8 original Midas PRO-Series microphone pre amps and 8 XLR outputs with towering audio quality for both live and studio environments.

8 x 8 TRS line auxiliary ins and outs help bring in signals from media players or computers.

If that's not enough local analog I/O, the new StageCONNECT interface allows connection of breakout boxes with up to 32 channels of input and output, e.g. connecting the console to the side rack over a single XLR microphone or DMX cable.

Auto Pilot

Automixing with 2 groups of gain sharing is available on any 16 input channels.

The dependable and fast algorithm automatically tracks which microphone is receiving the highest levels, increases its channel gain, while reducing the sum of gain for all other channels in the same group.

The ambient noise level will remain constantly low, while intelligibility and gain before feedback are increased considerably. It is the ideal tool for corporate events, panel discussions, house of worship or broadcast applications with several speakers.

Trigger

MIDI In/Out plus additional 2 x 2 GPIO provide an interface for console event triggers and external show control.

Accurate

40-bit floating point processing at 48 or 44.1 kHz, with 1 ms round-trip latency.

Double Solo

Dual solo/monitor buses per channel for monitoring over phones/IEM and/or floor wedges and studio monitor speakers.

RC and OSC

Networked remote control supports binary and OSC communication and allows console control from a distance. This is open to 3rd party application development in addition to Behringer's cross-platform app, WING CO-PILOT.

MIDAS - The Legend in Sound Quality

Ever since its formation in the 1970s, MIDAS has had a long history of innovation and leadership in the world of audio mixing consoles. Employed by the most famous touring acts and installations world-wide, legendary MIDAS consoles such as the XL4 and Heritage H3000 quickly became industry standards.

MIDAS has earned their impeccable reputation due to their no-compromise approach for audio and build quality and in particular for their Award-winning Mic Preamps which are considered by industry experts as the industry’s best sounding designs. Building on this legacy, the XL8 and PRO Series of Live Mixing Systems continue this great heritage of Award-winning audio quality.

BEHRINGER is proud to incorporate a MIDAS designed mic preamp for the ultimate in high-quality audio reproduction in both live and studio environments.

Massive Connectivity

When used as part of a complete X32 system, two S32 Stage Boxes can be connected via the mixer’s built-in dual AES50 ports, providing connectivity for up to 64 remote mic/line inputs, 32 balanced outputs and the awesome POWERPLAY P-16 Personal Monitoring System – which can feed up to 16 individual monitor mixes via CAT5 to every musician on stage.

When 32 inputs are not enough, an S32 Stage Box may also be cascaded with an S16 or SD16 for full use of the 48-channel bidirectional capacity of AES50 SuperMAC networking on just one CAT5 line. We also included 2 optical ADAT outputs and two AES-3 (AES/EBU) stereo outputs for digitally connecting to outboard devices, such as PA system controllers.

The S32 also features a convenient USB port for system updates via your PC – plus MIDI I/O for your lighting systems and sound module control.

Ecosystem and Beyond

The S32 was initially designed with our flagship X32 Digital Mixing Console in mind, but any mixing board with AES50 networking capability can still tap directly into the S32’s powerful feature set. For instance, an S32 and X32 CORE can be used to create an amazing power-combo for remote-controlled digital mixing in only 4U.

While the X32 CORE may be used to run an independent monitor mix, it can also relay and share all I/O with the FOH – whether you are using an X32 Series console, or any other digital mixer that supports MADI, Dante, ADAT or AES50 I/O.

We offer very reasonably priced option cards to replace the standard 32 x 32 channel USB interface for exactly that purpose. You can even choose to run the complete show from the stage rack’s X32 CORE via our remote control apps.

And since the S32 and X32 CORE communicate via AES50, they don’t even have to live in the same physical rack, but can be separated by up to 100 m (328') of CAT5 cabling, if that is more convenient for your venue.

ULTRANET – Seamless Integration

The world-renowned engineers at KLARK TEKNIK, MIDAS, TURBOSOUND and BEHRINGER have all come together to create something truly innovative that will change your live and studio workflow forever – welcome to ULTRANET.
